Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, is by far the oldest of this quartet. Approx. 50 AD the Romans had already built a castellum on the site of the current Cathedral Square: Fort Trajectum. About 650 years later, the old fort was converted into a mission post by the English Benedictine monk Willibrord. From that time on, Utrecht grew from a small town into a religious power center. Partly due to the construction of an ingenious medieval complex of canals, weavings and wharf cellars with streets on two levels, which created the largest port of that time in the middle of the city, Utrecht experienced unprecedented prosperity for a long time. The city remained the largest and most important in the Northern Netherlands until the 16th century. Utrecht is gradually being displaced from first place by the rise of Amsterdam, The Hague (The Hague) and Rotterdam. However, the city has always remained important, to which its central location has certainly contributed. Amid all those attractive, historic places and buildings, Utrecht also turns out to be a surprisingly lively, current and fresh city, attractive to a very diverse audience. The compilers of the guide have tried to briefly inform you during your walk through the city. The photos give an impression of the characteristic features of the city. The numbering of the photos corresponds to the map in the heart of the guide.
