Three generations have grown up with the work of Dick Bruna. What is it that makes his work so powerful and beloved? The authors of this book summarize it as follows: ‘And therein lies the essence: the gong of Matisse, the punch of Cassandre, and the humanity of Bruna.’ Award-winning author and illustrator Bruce Ingman takes an international perspective on the life and work of Dick Bruna. Ingman is also the head of the Children’s Book Illustration master’s program at Goldsmiths, University of London. Ramona Reihill has worked for years as a children’s book editor, including at the English publisher of the Miffy books. Together, they have written a book that covers every facet of Dick Bruna’s life and work. Drawing on unique material from Bruna’s private archive, it sheds new light on a life entirely dedicated to art—from his acclaimed poster and book cover designs to his beloved creation, Miffy.
