The Javastraat, the Annastraat and the Donkerstraat: everyone has probably seen these Utrecht street names. But where do these names actually come from? Author Erik Tigelaar did a big job. After more than twenty years of research, Utrecht has recently officially launched an Utrecht street name book. Tigelaar presented his book on Friday 14 April during the Historical Café of Oud-Utrecht in the Neude Library. The book describes, among other things, the nearly 350 Utrecht streets that date from before the year 1850 in detail. The 352-page Utrecht street name book is based on new archival research. The nearly 350 streets that predate 1850 are described in detail, including earlier designations, earliest mention and the explanation of the current name.
